>>Electricity
The voltage in China is 220V, 50Hz. In China two and three pin plugs are used. Please ensure that you have the appropriate adapter with you, though some hotels provide universal plug-in adapter.
>>Climate
At the early days of October, daytime temperature in Shanghai averages between 18o C and 23oC (64o and 74oF) with relatively low humidity. Occasional showers may be expected.
Daytime temperature in Beijing is slimier as that in Shanghai, but at night it is a bit colder.
>>Currency and Taxes
The currency in China is RMB (Renminbi). The value of the RMB100 in May 2008 was approximately equal to $14.5USD or €9.2.
Credit, including Visa, MasterCard, American Express is widely accepted in hotels and major shops. Taxes are not applicable.
>>Tipping
Tipping is generally not expected in China.
>>Visa Application
To attain visa to China in your local Chinese Embassy/Consulate/Visa Office, you may be asked to deliver an Authorized Notification Form. In case of this, please send Dr. Xianzhong ZHAO (x.zhao@mail.tongji.edu.cn) an e-mail/letter with your and your accompanying person’s: Name as indicated in passport, Nationality, Occupation, Passport Number, Entry date, as well as your exact address; he will mail you the stamped form.
In case you need a written invitation as well, please send Dr. Zhao an email and he will mail you the corresponding letter.
